If you suffer from bad breath there are some quick and easy steps you can help to get rid of the problem.
Check for gum disease
One of the most common causes of bad breath is gum disease. The bacteria found in gum disease, otherwise known as periodontal disease, can actually produce gases which result in someone having bad breath. This can be treated with a quick scale and polish by one of our hygienists. They can even give you advice on how to best keep your oral hygiene in check and maintain a healthy mouth by brushing and flossing at least twice a day.
A little known fact is that eating unsweetened natural yogurt can help keep bad breath at bay.
Clean your tongue
Your tongue tends to trap food debris and bacteria due to its rough surface, which can be a leading case of bad breath for people. The best way to keep your breath nice and fresh is by using a tongue scraper, available from most pharmacies, or your toothbrush.
A major source for bad breath is smoking, which is also among the most common causes of gum disease. It’s important to quit or at least cut down on the amount you smoke if you want to maintain a healthy, fresh mouth. Try chewing on sugar-free gum instead.
Clean those dentures
If you wear dentures, we do recommend you remove them each night before you go to sleep and to clean them regularly.
