The Importance of Healthy Gums

Healthy gums are vital when it comes to your teeth, but many people often brush off potential signs of gum issues as nothing more than a temporary problem. Falling into this habit can be quite worrying, as this is your gums way of telling you that something is wrong. Treatment does vary depending on the severity of the gum infection and there are a couple of signs to look out for when it comes to spotting possible gum disease or infection – such as bleeding when brushing your teeth and heightened sensitivity.

Gingivitis

The earliest stage of gum disease, gingivitis is caused by a build up of bacteria around the gums. This can be the result of poor oral hygiene and can be worsened by smoking, poor diet, stress and can even be hereditary. Quite often at this early stage, you may not experience any discomfort but may have blood when brushing your teeth as well as some swelling. The best way to treat this is to ensure that you are brushing correctly as well as flossing and make an appointment with your hygienist.

Periodontitis

The next stage of gum disease can see infection move below the gum line and impact the bones and tissue which support your teeth. If this goes untreated it can lead to long term damage to your teeth and jaw bone, as the bacteria slowly attacks tissue in your mouth, leading to gum recession and possible tooth loss.
